Total Net Sown Area (NSA) of the country as per the latest estimate (2006-07) is
141.06 Mha, constituting 42.92 percent of Total Geographical Area (TGA) of
the country. Double-cropped area is estimated as 53.98 Mha
-
Total
NSA estimated in the first (2004-05) and second (2005-06) year is 140.17,
141.87 Mha, respectively. The increase in NSA is more prevalent in states
like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The area
underdouble crop has exhibited an increasing trend throughout all the three
cycles especially in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Tamil nadu and Orissa.
-
Out of 33 meteorological subdivisions, 14 have shown an increase in NSA with
increasing rainfall from cycle-1 to cycle 2. Moderate drought conditions and
seasonal rainfall deficiency of 26 per cent to 50 per cent were reported in
2006 (cycle-3) in North Eastern states, Western UP. The NSA during the
period 2006-07 (cycle-3) also has shown reduction in relation to 2005 in
these states. High recurrent fallow areas are present especially in areas
having less than 750 mm rainfall.
-
Area
under forest cover has been estimated as 67.08 Mha covering 20.4 percent of
total geographic area of the country. Reduction in forest areas by 701 Sq.km
in NE states due to shifting cultivation especially in states like Tripura,
Manipur and Mizoram during 2005-06 and 2006-07 has been observed.
-
Overall
LULC classification accuracy of 90.1% varying from 86 to 95% has been
achieved.
